Haiku poems have been written in Japan for hundreds of years. A haiku consists of three lines with a specific syllable count. They are a fun and easy way to start writing poetry.

Choose your subject.
Decide what your haiku is going to be about. Traditionally haiku poems are about nature or the seasons, but now haikus can be about any subject you want to write about.
Write the first line of your haiku.
It should be five syllables and introduce the subject of your poem. If you have trouble figuring out the syllables count them on your fingers.
Write the second line of your haiku.
The second line should be seven syllables.
Write the last line of your haiku.
The last line should have five syllables, just like the first line.
Read over your haiku.
Double check the syllables to make sure they are correct and see if you want to change any words.
Write as many haikus as you want.
It might be a fun idea to write a haiku about each of the seasons, about each of your friends, or all your favorite animals and plants.
